Welcome to P4/5

Our teacher is Mrs Hobson.

A warm welcome to the Primary 4 and Primary 5 classroom! Children begin their busy day with a look at their visual timetable, ensuring all of the children are prepared for the exciting lessons ahead.

During literacy activities, children are encouraged to take part in practical and written tasks. Lessons will be interactive and engaging, catering for pupil’s individual learning styles. Reading continues to play a big part in each child’s development and they are encouraged to read for enjoyment. This will be done during class time, alongside designated shared, modelled and guiding reading.  Written activities give children the opportunity to explore and write using different genres. Children were recently learning about instructional writing and what better way to teach them the real life concept than following a set of instructions and making butter themselves!

Numeracy skills continue to be explored through the areas of Mental Maths, Number, Shape and Space, Data Handling and Measures and Problem Solving. Children are encouraged to take part in practical activities which help them prepare for life in the 21st century. During money activities children have had the opportunity to learn about the concept of budgeting. They were given a set amount of money and planned a day trip. Primary 4 and Primary 5 used iPads and computers to carry out research and then shared their findings with the class. Tasks like these inspire children to develop their independent skills.

Primary 4 and Primary 5 practice problem solving skills and research topics by themselves. They take part in a range of group activities so that they can learn to cooperate and work alongside others. Plenty of practical work and fun games help them to understand new concepts such as multiplication and division, before moving on to written work.

Being creative helps them to retain facts, so they often collaborate on collages, models, sound stories and drama as part of The World Around Us themes. I.C.T. is included throughout all aspects of the curriculum. Topics this year include The Rainforest, Ancient Egypt and The Human Body. P4/5 have the opportunity to attend swimming lessons as part of the P.E. curriculum. Pupils continue to engage in P.D.M.U. and creative activities continuing the development of their thinking skills.
